Re: Nicollet Mall Reconstruction Project
Setting up a couple of taxi stands on cross streets directly adjacent to Nicollet Mall would be a good compromise.

Re: Rumors: A Historical Record of Mystery
My wife and I went to Conga Latin Bistro just cause we were walking by on a Friday or Saturday night a few months ago. It was packed with dancing and music on the first floor and a dancing to a (12? piece) band playing in the basement. It felt like we were in Havana or maybe Miami, not Minneapolis. ...

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minneapolis
'Soccer land deal hints at public subsidy request' 'The owner of the site for a new pro soccer team says developers want time to appeal to lawmakers.' HG, How is this not a solid story? It seems like it'd be negligent not to print this information. Do you think the media should defer to McGuire's PR...

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minneapolis
I wouldn't call that article fluff. Roper had the property owner on record explaining his reason to believe public funding would be demanded. McGuire has been so damned cagey about this you can't blame the press for following up on the issue of public funding in whatever way possible. And that Mary ...

Re: Subsidized Housing
BOOM: http://www.minnpost.com/minnesota-blog-cabin/2015/03/just-saying-no-affordable-housing I love this quote from that peice: When someone who is working full-time can’t afford an apartment, that’s a societal failure, not a personal problem. Housing is one problem that the market is not solving.

Ultimately stadium subsidies are team owner subsidies, but politicians can't say that.

Re: "The Miracle of Mpls", Local Responses & Racial Disparit
Sure it's subjective. But let's not go too crazy with moral relativity. Was the end of Jim Crow laws subjectively a good thing? It probably was. Certainly many people at the time thought the chaos was indicative of American's downfall. We can see now that those lunch counter sit-ins were one step in...

Re: "The Miracle of Mpls", Local Responses & Racial Disparit
Should the thousands of people who participated all be prosecuted? There's quite a bit a prosecuter discretion exercised just to decide which of the handful of folks they're charging out of the masses. You (and those arrested) seem to be suggesting that because you agree with the protest and disagre...

Yep, I picked up a suit from Saks too for over 80% off. I only got the pants hemmed, though. I usually go to Sew What in the TCF Building skyway. I've never found reasonable pricing on suit jacket alterations. I once picked up a clearance suit at Marshalls and brought it to a tailor for alterations....

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
Fair point, FMP. On the other hand, replacing a seedy sex destination store with say.. a condo development / foodie restaurant is as much a result of the neighborhood changing to serve a different class as the other market forces you describe. So, it's not exactly like a Blockbuster being replaced b...

I've got no love for Bakk, and I'm not inclined to defend him, but I really don't see the issue. More than anyone else, he speaks for the upper chamber of the state legislature. Telling MLS that there's not going to be state money for a new stadium is courteous. Who knows what McGuire may have told ...

Re: Nicollet Mall Reconstruction Project
I hope they do retain most of the current public art. I've been wary about this reconstruction partly because I don't want to lose art on the mall (also I'm a bit paranoid they'll try to sanitize the mall by making it more uncomfortable to spend time there). One comment stood out to me in reference ...

The Sunday night shenanigans with riot police, tear gas, and unruly crowds has worn on this area. I think it's gotten a bad reputation even though it's mostly just weekend bar close when the problems occur.
