Downtown Minneapolis - News & General Topics
Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
Contractors are pretty savvy about salvaging materials out of buildings these days, so odds are that somebody from an architectural salvage company has done a walk through and identified what they think there's a resale market for (as opposed to a scrap value).

I'd have to guess historic stone in North Minneapolis would be all over this. If you've never visited there, do, it's amazing.

I filmed the removal of the Stoneboat nearest to City Center. Took around 40 minutes to get it all ready but I came back just in time to see the lifting of the 30,000 lb boat!

Great piece on the Gateway area in the Variety section of the Sat/Sun Star Tribune this week.

Saw the above in the meeting minutes for June's North Loop NA meeting. Has anybody heard anything else about this?1st Avenue DID Pedestrian Project: the DID is looking at ways to make 1st Avenue more inviting between 4th and 6th, by widening the sidewalks and adding greenery. To do so, a reduction in parking stalls and modifications to the bike lane would likely be required.

Article doesn't say exactly where the location will be.
Interesting that they chose Minneapolis over say Chicago first?

No surprise there. But the real fight was never going to be at the HPC.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
Some grim numbers for any remodel in that PDF. Sounds like the best-case scenario for this building is for it to sit vacant for another few years, and hope the Mill District energy makes this area more viable.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
I'd take those numbers with a grain of salt, frankly. If you're trying to justify demolition, of course you'd use worst-case numbers for everything.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
While I don't disagree with the actions the HPC took, I think they'll end up on shaky grounds for the building being "historical." However, there's no new surface parking lots downtown. End of story (this is downtown, right?). I don't see them getting very far with this.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
Meanwhile, a proposal the HPC is much more likely to approve:

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
Is the space between the flex posts for parking or the bike lane? I'd say that could be confusing. I do like that there is now space to actually walk without bumping the people on the patios!
Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
As I understand it, the old parking is the new bike lane and the old bike lane is the new sidewalk.
