Renaming of Dight Ave to Cheatham Ave
Renaming of Dight Ave to Cheatham Ave
LCC Hosts Meeting to Discuss New Name for Dight Avenue
January 24th, 5:30-7:30 pm, St. James AME Church Fellowship Hall, 3600 Snelling Avenue. Dr. Charles F. Dight was a Minneapolis Council member during the early 1900’s. He founded the Minnesota Eugenics Society in 1923 and was a Nazi sympathizer who supported sterilization of people with disabilities, calling them “feeble-minded” and “insane.” These views are not an image that Greater Longfellow would like to perpetuate. The community is invited to discuss renaming Dight Avenue to reflect the community’s values of engagement and inclusivity. Contact Melanie at 612-722-4529 ext 4 or [email protected] for more information.
My proposal: Fish Jones Avenue.

Re: Dight Ave
nasa35 Avenue.
But f'real--I think this was briefly discussed at Minnescraper--all the numbered Aves. in South MPLS really should get names. Maybe they could be named after allergies? Gluten Ave., Lactose Ave., etc.

Re: Dight Ave
I love this idea.Husker Du Ave. !!!
Although it should be noted that they had their share of bad habits (perhaps not rising to the level of Nazi-sympathizing, but still).
Re: Dight Ave
We're going to avoid Nazi connotations by naming it after Charles Lindbergh?

Re: Dight Ave
Husker Du made me think Umlaut Ave, then pedants on Wikipedia made me think Diaeresis Ave.

Me thinks there might be a few areas where public works could better spend the money ($5k+?) required to make such a change. I like Longfellow Avenue but that's already in use. Maybe Calhoun Avenue to erk the do gooders in SW and mess with suburbanites who plug Calhoun into their GPS.

Re: Dight Ave
If they're gonna do this, might as well rename Snelling too. Yeah, I know it refers to Fort Snelling...whatever.
Snelling Avenue is too prominent a street in St. Paul for Minneapolis to have one too. I'm aware there are a jillion other cases of name duplication between the cities. For some reason a Snelling Avenue in Minneapolis really bothers me, and I live on Grand Avenue (the Minneapolis one)
My suggestion: Song Avenue, as in The Song of Hiawatha

well Calhoun wasn't exactly a saint compared to Dight with regards to slaveryMe thinks there might be a few areas where public works could better spend the money ($5k+?) required to make such a change. How about Minneapolis Ave? And Minneapolis can have St. Paul Ave somewhere...If they're gonna do this, might as well rename Snelling too. Yeah, I know it refers to Fort Snelling...whatever.

Tell it like it is, baby!

Re: Dight Ave
We actually have both already. There's a Saint Paul Avenue over near Cedar Lake and a Minneapolis Avenue near the river by the Franklin Avenue bridge. Both are little stubs. How about Minneapolis Ave? Re: Dight Ave
Worth mentioning too that while Minneapolis has a "Saint Paul Avenue", Saint Paul's inferiority complex would prevent it from EVER having a Minneapolis Avenue. Kinda like how Star Tribune gladly reports St. Paul news, but the Pioneer Press website contains no Minneapolis section.
