That would be the easiest way for Minneapolis to hit 500,000 citizens.

Not necessarily Brooklyn Park, right away, though. Start with Robbinsdale and Lauderdale, and the remainder of Richfield.

Places with the street grid are one thing, but I wouldn't (and I'm not in charge) want anywhere with a postwar development pattern. Not that there's none of that in the city already, obviously...

post-war development WITHIN the city is quite rare, I think. Most of the bungalows south of 50th street were built in the 40's, if that's what you mean by post-war. Otherwise the streets and parks weren't laid out in any kind of post-war pattern that I can think of.

...and this again over in St. Paul:

There are pockets of redevelopment all over, such as these rambler-style houses a few blocks further north of the big red blob.

...and there's the West Side Flats area, Energy Park, and other St. Paul Port Authority projects... St. Paul also literally has a "Suburban Avenue", though I'm not sure if that was a redevelopment or what.

Officials in Hopkins are hoping to get federal money to redevelop an office building near the Hopkins SWLRT stop into a hotel + park-and-ride combination. Here's the story in the StarTribune.
...a big park-and-ride there would allow the city to reduce the number of parking spaces planned at the Blake Road and Shady Oak Road stations, thus freeing more space for redevelopment activities at those sites. An unnamed housing developer is already eyeing the Blake station but is being stymied by the size of its proposed parking deck, said Kersten Elverum, Hopkins’ planning and development director.

What is new in this story is the news that the Blake Station has a developer eyeing it for a housing development. That Johnson building is ugly as sin, but it is fully occupied with taxpaying businesses the owner doesn't want to sell (yet). While he can't be surprised that the city has hoped his property becomes a TOD (plans have been public for years now) and he hasn't objected to those ever, his raising objections just because a proposal is out there that has a parking ramp is a bit hollow.

I still have a painful time eminent domaining a successful business out of existence just to HOPE something else comes along that you'd rather have...

Scott county is considering a 1/2 cent sales tax to fund transportation/transit projects (as allowed now, since they didn't join the Counties Transit Improvement Board group or whatever that's called). They've created an online forum to gather public comment, and its about what you'd expect from a group of Scott County internet users. http://www.co.scott.mn.us/CountyGov/Spe ... /home.aspx

Sigh. My favorite:
1/2 cent sales tax (on every dollar?) will make it more expensive to shop in Scott County.
No, it's 1/2 cent on every third dollar. If you can keep all your purchases to $2.99 or below, you never have to pay it!

I don't know how serious the proposal was, but it's from the mid-1980's. The street Concorde Place may be related to this development. It's located just off of Burnsville Parkway, east of 35W, southwest of Heart of the City.

Was on HWY100 the other day, when I saw a new building going up at the SE quadrant of the 100/494 interchange area. Is that another hotel or apartment building?

I was just checking Minnetonka's page just last week trying to find an update on the HCMC proposal at Excelsior and Shady Oak. Very useful.
