The fact there's a calendar makes me happy. The Commons said they would be doing something like this, but a draft calendar was never released, and so far events are pretty scarce.

This would seem to confirm that the rooftop food/bev space will not be open to the public, which is a bummer.

I'm working with Michael Rainville's office to install a midblock flashing crosswalk between Target Field Station and North Loop Green. Many people cross there anyways, and with the addition of a large development like NLG there will just be so many more people looking to cross between the light rail and the apartment/office building.

So this is what I got back public works staff

“It really is not feasible. A brief explanation: If ‘we’ (City, Metro Transit, whomever) puts in a pedestrian controlled crossing (i.e., Walk/Don’t Walk), then when it says Walk, the train must be positively stopped at the crossing via signaling. This is a federal manual requirement. That signaling does not exist today at this location. At this time I would not even want to hazard a guess on what it would cost to install that signaling plus the associated train detection and communications back to the station to the immediate West or the 5th Street/3rd Avenue intersection to the east. Also, (cost and constructability issues aside) Metro Transit Rail Operations would have to agree to a change in operations, which I think is very unlikely.”

I did follow up with a question about using a marked crosswalk with a flashing lights button, so I will see what happens with that.

I'm curious how a "pedestrian ramp" ended up there in the first place. It must have had to do with meeting ADA requirements when matching the light rail grade crossing and the existing sidewalk.

Could a pedestrian crossing go under the bridge? No digging required! It nevertheless wouldn't be cheap, but it would avoid messing with the light rail. Is the desire for a pedestrian crossing something that's being mooted about just on this site, or is there a party somewhere with a need for it and the means to push it forward?

So I fully understand from that explanation why they cannot put in a crossing signal, as the signaling would impact train operations. But why can't they just stripe a crosswalk? No push button activation, just a regular painted crosswalk. It's not an intersection, but a pedestrian crossing of a roadway, so I'm not sure what rules apply. Here's an example in the Nokomis area of a trail crossing a roadway, not at an intersection; there's a yellow flashing beacon without a button: https://www.google.com/maps/@44.9193556 ... 384!8i8192

Maybe this would be a good spot for a raised sidewalk crossing.

Apologies for being a bit off-topic but...

Wouldn't it be wonderful if DID Ambassadors were our aggressive champions in helping keep bike lanes clear?

Like, they would have traffic control on speed dial to swing by and ticket, and then tow trucks in route as well for being parked illgeally at lighting speeds. I'd imagine if we could clean out our bike lanes of "fake bikes" at record breaking speeds then maybe we wouldn't feel the need for so many more mid-block crossings simply because we could utilize the existing roadway as it was created and intended to be as such. ...Just a thought, city would have more revenue, and maybe less demand for expensive infrastructure.

So I did get a reply back about a raised crosswalk and/or flashing crosswalk. Public works thinks that Metro Transit would say no to changing their operation around there, and that just a raised crosswalk would encourage more people to cross without the specific safety measures in place. CM Rainville also reached out this morning that he agrees that with North Loop Green going up that there will be more crossings there and that will decrease safety. He told me they will keep an eye on this issue. I just hope that doesn't mean nothing will get done until someone gets hurt...

How about just a normal painted crosswalk for starters? They could even call it a trial period if that's what gets it done. Would really hate for the perfect to be the enemy of the good here.

It's stupid, but I'm sure the issue is that if they make any improvements that encourage people to cross here, and then somebody crosses and gets run over by a train, they'll be liable.

A raised crosswalk is essentially an extra wide speed bump. People are going to cross here with or without a crosswalk unless they put up a fence (even then people will cross). I guess I'm having a hard time understanding how a traffic calming measure would make people less safe or interfere with the LRT station. Unless pedestrians who live or visit the North Loop are incapable of turning or stopping after crossing a street and are in danger of being run over by a train.

Hines hosted a realtor for a construction tour. He claims 354 luxury condo units. I reached out... it's apartments as it's always been.

According to him the first 6 floors will be the short term rentals, 18th floor is amenity. 352 are long term and 98 are short term. Expected completion is April 2024 for the residential.
