Re: Green Line Extension - Southwest LRT
There are going to be three really low ridership stops on the Mpls portion of the SWLRT, but the Bassett Creek Valley Station and Bryn Mawr Station bug me more than the 21st Street Station for two reasons. It would be nice to have a understanding of what happens to buses once SWLRT starting up. But...

Re: Green Line Extension - Southwest LRT
Is it too late to switch to the 3C….. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I am guessing there would have been a LOT more tunnels and unexpected impediments if they had gone route 3c... Like maybe yeah, but it would have been worth it. The tunnel in Kenwood is to appease NIMBYs and the ridership at 2...

Re: North Loop Green - Hines - 350 N 5th St(?) - 35 stories - 393'/418'
I'm working with Michael Rainville's office to install a midblock flashing crosswalk between Target Field Station and North Loop Green. Many people cross there anyways, and with the addition of a large development like NLG there will just be so many more people looking to cross between the light ra...

Re: Amtrak: Empire Builder and Great River (TCMC)
Amtrak has told legislatures that their next priority after NLX for our state will be a second Twin Cities-Fargo Daily Train which the legislature is trying to use to also get a Northstar extension to St. Cloud. The feds are planning on paying for the Amtrak study. Would it be worthwhile to investi...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Minneapolis ranked #123 best biking city (#21 for large cities) in people for bikes city rankings. https://cityratings.peopleforbikes.org/cities/minneapolis-mn St Paul did a bit better #83 (#15 for large cites). I'm a bit sceptical of these rankings but I'm hoping we can do better in the future esp...

Snelling redesign from 4 to 2 lanes between Ford and Montreal. https://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/snellingave-stpaul/index.html Didn’t think I ever see this. Their map really makes this feel longer than the 2000' that it is. Do we know if that 10' trail is a long term plan for more of Snell...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
I would add what would be easiest and relatively cheapest way to build a tunnel a through DT without completely disrupting service. Logically a cut and cover under 5th with portals along the north side of US Bank Stadium and right after 1st Ave would make a ton of sense but that would completely ru...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
Cities including Dallas, Austin Edmondton and Portland are either planning or constructing tunnels through their downtowns. Planning would be a loose term when referring to Portland. It's a ways out after the current three projects. The time savings through downtown Portland would be roughly 16 min...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
I don't get the two stations at Target Field thing - what an incredible waste of money. I recall hearing that the original Target Field station is still operating due to FTA funding being used. There's usually as sunset date on requiring the return of FTA funds should a piece of infrastructure be l...

Re: Northern Lights Express
Since this looks increasingly realistic, I have some basic questions for people more in the know: - Would this be double tracked the entire way? Or would there be timed passes? Or would there be just a single trainset operating each day, going back and forth? - Assuming it would use diesel locomoti...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and TCMC
Maybe this belongs in the Fantasy Maps thread, but someone asked about the best route to connect Minneapolis to Sioux Falls in this thread. IMO a route to Willmar, MN goes too far north before connecting with the BNSF line through SW MN. The Twin Cities & Western railroad angles southwest and c...

Re: Northern Lights Express
Most regional Amtrak services are in a push-pull configuration. Many of these currently use F40PH locomotives converted into "Cabbage" cars on the opposite end from the locomotive with a cab and room for baggage. The remainder use other cab car configurations. Most regional lines, includin...

At some point the parking garage dropped the Fleet Farm name is now just Stadium Parking Ramp. Fleet Farm's naming rights must have been for five years.

(Also jealous of CATS Fare-capping) That's how things work here in Portland. If you tap twice in a day you get a day pass, if you tap 40 times in a month you earn a month pass for the rest of the month. Additionally, you can tap using your phone, watch, or debit/credit card. https://myhopcard.com/h...

Re: Orange Line / 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown Project
Yes, the new concrete put in as part of the Orange Line project has integrally colored concrete (that's really much more pink than red). However, all of the other applications I can think of locally are red paint applied to existing asphalt, which is what concerns me. I'll chat with some of our bus...

Re: Orange Line / 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown Project
My concern is that the paint on asphalt is going to reduce friction quite a bit, especially after a few coats have been applied. Anecdotally, the painted portions of crosswalks can be pretty slippery under wet/icy conditions. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the red paint mixed in with the concret...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
I wonder how hard it would be to automate the trains. I would think a self driving train would be easier to accomplish than a self driving car. Not much steering going on that I can think of. It's relatively easy in fully dedicated right-of-way. The technology for mixed-environments is relatively n...
