Re: Amtrak: Empire Builder and Borealis (TCMC)
I don't know that it makes sense to get too down on the idea of the Borealis being extended to TFS in the future just because it didn't happen right off the bat. While it wouldn't be as much work as building a new station from scratch, there is a fair amount of work involved in turning TFS into an i...

Re: Amtrak: Empire Builder and Borealis (TCMC)
Interesting! My spouse and I went to Chicago over the weekend and on the way back Monday we did have to wait in a siding for both the eastbound Builder and Borealis to pass, the first time before Columbus and the second before Tomah (I think). Good to know that that's (hopefully) a temporary issue.

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan
Logan Park's anomalous Interior 1 status (the only Interior 1 south of Lowry, and adjacent to the Route 17 to boot!) should get fixed as well, but I generally agree with you. It would be nice to see Interior 3 extend a couple blocks out from major transit routes, but the big lifts going forward are ...

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan
Can't find the tweet, but I thought I saw that the retroactive bit applied only to first class cities, but the new law going forward applied to the seven metro counties? Oh, that makes sense. I was confused by my reading, since "This will protect the suburbs from being sued too" was a key...

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan
Huh. The language was changed at some point to specify cities of the first class, so only Minneapolis and St. Paul are immune to MERA lawsuits. The suburbs could all still be sued, should anyone wish to.

Re: Amtrak: Empire Builder and Borealis (TCMC)
My understanding is that they can't use the new Venture cars on the Borealis, because Minnesota isn't a part of the multi-state consortium that ordered them. Some of the NLX money appropriated in 2023 was to buy into the consortium for NLX, if MnDOT ever actually does anything with those hundreds of...

Re: Northern Lights Express
Not necessarily an issue, it could work just like the Missouri River Runner (2x daily Kansas City-St. Louis) and Lincoln Service (4x daily Chicago-St. Louis) do. One southbound Lincoln continues west as one of the River Runners, and one eastbound River Runner continues north as a Lincoln. The NLX sc...

It's there, certainly, but no one is even paying lip service to it being on the table. All of Our Streets' messaging (that I've seen, at least) has been the Transit Boulevard concept, usually using the "What if we built Hiawatha Ave through Seward" rendering.

Yeah, with Central also up for reconstruction in 2028, it's probably time to start working on Hennepin County to finish the 4-3 conversion of Broadway from University to 94.

Eastbound is scheduled for 11:05 departure from Chicago with a 6:30 arrival in St. Paul, not that I booked a trip as soon as seeing the news or anything.

Re: Red Rock Corridor
Given how often the intercity train to Duluth gets called LiGhT rAiL, I've gotta assume the same thing is happening here. There's no way they can actually be considering LRT for the seven miles of nothing between Dayton's Bluff and 494, or the rest of the way to Hastings. That's comparable to the fu...

Probably just key destinations, or routes like the 11 (Central-40th Ave-University-37th Ave-2 1/2 St-35th Ave-Main St-St. Anthony Parkway-Columbia-31st Ave... and that's just the half-hourly northernmost portion) will get pretty unwieldy.

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
They try not to, but the 11 runs on St. Anthony Parkway for a short distance where it's the only route through the rail yard. So there's precedent.
The 6 might too? I can't remember if that section on the south shore of Bde Maka Ska is technically a parkway or not.

Oof. Time to get J, K, and L lines picked out, I guess. Man, it really seemed like we had some momentum going.

Random people should not be entering active construction sites without PPE (or with PPE, to be clear), no matter how sure they are that they know more about safety than all the professionals. The 25' offset is what BNSF made up as a spec to not require a crash wall between their freight tracks and t...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
11th Ave S is getting resurfaced from West River Parkway to 8th St this year. I'd like to imagine that that would include completing the protection south of Washington, but I haven't seen any confirmation of that, and I don't really trust the current Public Works leadership. 9th and 10th Streets are...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
Yep, MnDOT is completely opaque with regards to their project schedules. I've been following the MnDOT University/Central planning process pretty closely since I live a block off of University, and this is the first indication that they're actually planning on reconstructing Central at a specific da...

New surface parking lots are still banned downtown, as far as I'm aware. Not that that's stopped people from demolishing buildings and leaving them as grassy lots for a decade or two in the past.
