Re: 2023-24 Minnesota Legislature
I vaguely remember the state Supreme Court ruling red-light cameras were unconstitutional under the MN Constitution but I absolutely could be making that up/remember that incorrectly IIRC last word on it was they concluded that if the fine was applied to the vehicle, not the person, it's constituti...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
This is wishful thinking given labor conditions and that many of these organizations are family run. TIL Taco Johns and LeeAnn Chin are small struggling businesses we can't expect more than the bare minimum from. And I'm not particularly fond of 'labor conditions' as an excuse, given that plenty of...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
Yeah, sorry, it's not all the skyways...and some other cities have their versions of them and do just fine. But if it was all the fault of the skyway, we would have a thriving active retail (whatever form that may take) scene on the 2nd level...we don't have that either. To be clear, my comments ab...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
I think it's also worth asking the question - is an empty retail parcel worse than a leased one with a tenant that doesn't draw anyone/provide value to the residents of Minneapolis? From the building's perspective - obviously leased space beats empty space. But I'd argue for any other interested par...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
Still...a lot of other cores of cities that are "less healthy" by a lot of measures that are less disappointing. A lot of other cores don't have a second, private-public retail environment that sucks the life out of the street level and has disjointed, confusing operating hours aimed at w...

Re: Fargo/Moorhead
Moorhead has generally been behind on this, but recently there's been a proposal to totally overhaul the dead mall/city hall near the river into a much more walkable and livable neighborhood. A sign of good things to come on the MN side I hope.

Re: Purple Line BRT (Rush Line Corridor)
If Maplewood pulls out we should just abandon this one. We can still improve transit on Arcade and WB Avenue with a future aBRT line to serve people who depend on transit, but I just don't think we're going to see the kind of redevelopment and land use changes needed to justify spending $400 million...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market
It's crazy to me that 45% of people never come into the office even once per week. When the choice is 'come in and work in the same open office nobody liked five years ago' or 'work in a private office at home with no commute,' it's an easy one to make. I think it's very telling that the people who...

Re: The Dayton's Project
Alternatively, if the largest lease holders reevaluate their needs and reshuffle to newly proposed Class A office towers, that frees up space in our existing Class A towers for more suburban businesses looking to dump their aging campuses. Even better, if it shuffles more leases out of our Class B a...

More downtown activity and a big redevelopment site in Plymouth? I see this as an absolute win.

Also elevated options are still being considered on Broadway!!!! LEAVE SOME COMMENTS TO SUPPORT THIS!!!! Higher speed trunk lines are so crucial! It's for this reason that it baffles me that they're still considering meandering through North Loop to reach Washington. It's like they've never even ta...

Also, Kelly Doran has sold off most of his eponymous companies, just to make matters more confusing. I was going to say, Kelly Doran might have sworn of developing in Minneapolis, but Doran Cos seems to have a different view. Especially thinking about the potential 275-300 unit affordable project t...

Re: Public Bathrooms
Ill answer the question-- nothing. There is no special public safety benefit of rest stop bathrooms, they are provided for CONVENIENCE. Which is what we are talking about here, in the city. I think an argument could be made if you expanded the definition of public safety to include public health. I...

I actually wouldn't be surprised if development slows down while the 2040 lawsuit issues are ironed out, but fears that Mpls is going to pass a rent control measure that isn't incredibly business and development friendly given the current leadership (and especially after the cold reception a blanket...

For every local dev that throws a performative "I'm done with developing here," it seems we get a new developer from Chicago who looks at the potential in our market like it's Christmas in July.

A plain parking lot could serve that function. Should we only provide parking lots along the freeways for people to recuperate and nap if public bathrooms aren’t a public service that everyone is entitled to without purchase?

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion
I feel like local politics twitter immediately following a primary isn't the place I'd trust for prognostication on the 2024 election. I seriously doubt he'd run when he's got a great gig right now where he can take credit for everything that goes well and always get away with shifting the blame for...

When were they saying Cedar Lake Regional Trail would reopen this fall? I've gotten the weekly construction emails for the past year and a half and I'm pretty sure that's been off the table since they changed construction methods on the south end of the tunnel ages ago. They have said that they put ...

Re: Public Bathrooms
The thought I had the other day while I was driving through southern MN on I-35 was how much outrage there would be if the rest stops, taxpayer funded public bathrooms that are well lit, monitored, and cleaned, were removed. For some reason this level of service is okay for auto travelers but not ci...

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics
As someone who has bought most of his dress shirts from H&M over the last few years... I had no idea there was one in Uptown. So it probably has less to do with their target demo and more to do with urban indoor malls being a terrible place to put your store.
