Ironclad Apartments & Moxy Hotel - Washington & Chicago
Re: Ironclad Apartments & Moxy Hotel - Washington & Chicago
Went by just a couple weeks ago. There's a sign up saying "Future home of Iron Clad" but no construction activity yet. I also wonder what's going on.

I work at Periscope and they closed down the parking lot for us on June 16th, so some things have been happening. But I've been wondering when they're going to start actual construction and completely close down the parking lot to other users.

There's a temporary chain link construction fence around this lot now...not sure that's new?

Also saw a backhoe in the lot this weekend. Maybe digging will start soon? There's a temporary chain link construction fence around this lot now...not sure that's new?

No more trees...
Re: Ironclad Apartments & Moxy Hotel - Washington & Chicago
It would have been nice if this project had some sort of connection linking the Hiawatha trail to Washington/Riverfront through 9th Ave. I've always wanted a solid connection between the river trails and the Hiawatha trail.
Re: Ironclad Apartments & Moxy Hotel - Washington & Chicago
Ground has been broken and the parking lot is all dug up now. Another one bites the dust.
Re: Ironclad Apartments & Moxy Hotel - Washington & Chicago
That is excellent. Can't wait to go and get some pictures next week. I don't post many of my pictures, but I take an awful lot of them, especially of new development.

I didn't have a camera on me, but there are some interesting shots to be had from the skyway to the stadium of this project and it's friend across the street when I walked over there today. The view is pretty neat over there. You can also see Legacy rising near the river.

The stone wall at Washington and Chicago is gone...well, in a pile in many pieces still onsite. I didn't have chance to stop and get a good look.

Re: Ironclad Apartments & Moxy Hotel - Washington & Chicago
I saw that too but judging by the rendering showing a small stone wall, they may reassemble it.
Re: Ironclad Apartments & Moxy Hotel - Washington & Chicago
It's in their documents that they plan to incorporate the stone retaining wall into the development.
Re: Ironclad Apartments & Moxy Hotel - Washington & Chicago
Maybe they had whole blocks saved somewhere else onsite. The only ones I saw in passing were broken up in a heap.

Fire hits hotel being built near Minneapolis riverfront; arson suspected
Fire crews found debris on the first floor, an assistant chief said.
By Paul Walsh Star Tribune JULY 23, 2017 — 11:24AM
A hotel being built near the Stone Arch Bridge along the downtown Minneapolis riverfront caught fire before dawn Sunday, and authorities suspect that it was intentionally set.
The blaze at the construction site brought fire crews to the scene about 4:15 a.m., and they used landlines to douse the flames.
“Crews found debris on the first floor of the structure,” Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Tyner said in a statement.
Tyner added, “The cause of this fire has been ruled arson.” The Fire Department has yet to disclose what led to that conclusion.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

Nice article about the Kharbanda family in the Business Journal, discussing their history, this new development, and what they plan to do next...
The family’s third act is the 1010 Building, a 261,000-square-foot Art Deco building just southeast of U.S. Bank Stadium. The Kharbandas bought the building in 2000 for $17.3 million and, since the departure of U.S. Bank in 2005, have struggled to land a long-term tenant, though they did get shorter term leases from stadium builder M.A. Mortenson and the Minnesota Vikings, for a preview center, during the stadium’s construction.
The family had kicked around the idea of doing a hotel or a medical office redevelopment, but have finally turned their attention toward residential.
“We are looking at apartments, that’s No.1 on our list,” said Varun Kharbanda.
The building has great bones and thick, heavy floors, he added. The family would know, as Basant and Varun are both engineers, with Basant retrofitting buildings with efficient energy systems in his earlier years.

I didn't remember hearing of this family involved in this before...I thought it was a more familiar developer. huh.

Years ago I worked on a study of that building to turn it into senior living. It actually has decent floor plates for residential - could be an interesting project.
