Thor Construction HQ - Penn and Plymouth
Thor Construction HQ - Penn and Plymouth
In much brighter news, Thor construction is proposing to move their headquarters from Fridley to a new multi-tenant office building at Penn and Plymouth;

Lots of talk about coordination with the county on incentives, sharing parking with NorthPoint Health clinic.

Re: Northside - General Topics
What's kind of astonishing is that they're proposing the idea of underground parking in a neighborhood where it would almost certainly be not only cheaper, but probably wouldn't run into too many hurdles (maybe I'm wrong on that part). But then we've got a lot of parking podiums downtown. Strange.

Looking really good. The inclusion of the Madewell logo in the renderings was a bit odd, if only perhaps because this seems like an odd location for a J. Crew spinoff, but otherwise this is looking slick.

Re: Thor Construction HQ - Penn and Plymouth
Only a little related -- does anybody know the history of the jog that occurs in Plymouth Avenue near Girard, and the alleys that run parallel to Plymouth through this stretch? Is this a vestige of the post-riot urban renewal, or was Plymouth always laid out like this?
Re: Thor Construction HQ - Penn and Plymouth
Definitely predates urban renewal--check out this plat map from the 1890s.
I'd guess that the jog was built when the Oak Park addition was platted so that the blocks between 6th (Olson) and Plymouth would be a standard length. Those irregular-size blocks east of Humboldt have been eradicated, so it's no longer obvious, but you can see in the old map how the Oak Park area tried to regularize the old streets when they came out the other side past Logan.

Re: Thor Construction HQ - Penn and Plymouth
The Northpoint building was torn down last week and the old Estes Funeral home short before that. Besides some surveyors I haven't seen any other activity for the new Northpoint building. Northpoint also seems to have seamlessly moved displaced units into the Thor-less building. Anyone know how much space Thor gave up in the building? It'll be nice to have it filled with some other jobs. The location is actually convenient, on the C-Line and 7 bus and not far from 55 or Golden Valley.

Re: Thor Construction HQ - Penn and Plymouth
I live three blocks from the new Thor building. My Homewood neighborhood facebook page hasn't had any updates about it. A while back there was discusion about a breakfast/sandwich/coffee shop going in the main level, but nothing has been done and there have been no, coming soon signs. There is a small workout gym that went in last year, but it doesnt seem very busy most of the time. The new funeral home building though, is a nice addition, and took up what was an empty corner on Penn and Plymouth.
