7200 France - Edina
Council denied approval.

"Council does not grant approval to proposed redevelopment of 7200 France Ave. Hard to say what will happen to that site in the future."
The city gets a ton of raspberries aimed at them from me. :p~

The developer works with the city for a year and pretty much meets all the residents' demands for redesigns and street access, etc....and still gets shot down. If I were him I'd see if I could pull a Brutalist architect out of retirement and build a medical office building catering to contagious disease specialists. Big thumbs down on the new city councilors from me.

Re: 7200 France - Edina
Is the implication that this failed because of new councilmembers, possibly elected on somewhat anti-development platforms?
What was the vote split?

So, do we know why exactly this failed?

From Scott Neal:

"On the 7200 France matter, Hovland, Swenson and Brindle voted yes. Stewart and Staunton voted no. It needed four votes to prevail."

Yup, those "NO" votes would be the two new guys: http://current.mnsun.com/2015/01/7200-f ... -in-edina/

So what *are* the goals for France Avenue? However, he said the plan would “set a psychological precedent” that would be counterproductive to the goals for France Avenue.
The problem with being an introvert online is that no one knows you're just hanging out and listening.

Re: 7200 France - Edina
Again, as somebody who's lived in one of the RENTAL homes behind this project (if it's not the closest house we lived in the 2nd closest house to the project), they really don't have a strong case against this development. It won't block sunlight except for the early morning sunrise. It certainly won't generate much traffic, and it would be FAR less traffic than a medical center would bring. Never mind that any traffic-conscience individual who would care enough about traffic to sway their decision on where to live would first take notice of one of the BUSIEST roads in the state that's literally in your backyard -- France Ave. finally, the block behind this project is a cul-de-sac dead end -- nobody is driving past their house to get to the site.
That all being said, I completely agree with those who are concerned about setting a new precedent here, to presumably be matched or exceeded as time moves on. That's a fairly legitimate reason to say "nay", but not the residents.

Re: 7200 France - Edina
It's at 55% NO / 45% YES after 300+ votes. C'mon people let's turn this thing around!
Re: 7200 France - Edina
Not exactly a shocker. A lot of MSPBJ's readers are suburban-sited office execs. Kind of surprised it's so close, actually.
Re: 7200 France - Edina
This proposed project has some traffic and watershed issues that are not yet resolved but don't worry the Edina mayor is working quietly behind the scenes to bring this to a vote again. Not sure how many times this development will come to a vote before it is officially dead.

How will they kill the very much worse medical offices that fits the "genius of the heavens" zoning and "plan"?

Re: 7200 France - Edina
I don't get it. I thought the door was shut for a year because of the decision at the last council meeting. I'm glad to hear a mixed-use development isn't completely dead, but not clear on the mechanism.
