Groundbreaking for the new Mississippi Market took place today. Fences were going up as I drove by on the way home this afternoon. The 26,000-square-foot store will be under construction until July of 2015, but dors are not expected to open until September of 2015. This store will be one block up from the new Metro State parking ramp that's currently under construction.
It also sounds like there are plans to build a 113 unit senior living building on the block as well, but I was not able to find any details regarding the timing on that project.

Mississippi Market - 740 East 7th Street
Re: Mississippi Market - 740 East 7th Street
Sooo excited for this! Just a quick bus ride from downtown!
Re: Mississippi Market - 740 East 7th Street
The real work started last week. They have the corner all dug out and a massive pile of dirt. I honestly wasn't expecting such a deep hole for a building of this size.
I hope this project and the new construction on the Metro State campus kick things into high gear for this area of Saint Paul. We 've had a few new restaurants and businesses go in on Payne Ave about a mile away over the past few years, but 7th street could use one or two more "destination" locations like this. The neighborhood has a lot of potential and I'd love to see the boarded up storefronts opened back up with new businesses.

Looks like a nice building.

That's a lot better than I was expecting, but I guess I was hoping for at least one small storefront on the 7th street side since there is already a lot of retail on 7th street. It'll be odd having such a large building that has nothing to offer to the surrounding community.

If anyone is ever in the area it would be nice if they could snap a progress picture of Mississippi Market. Thanks.

The apartment building approvals have been appealed by the neighborhood to city council. The 4.5 story building is deemed too large.

It's progressing quite nicely. They should be done with the steel frame of the building in about a week.
The senior rental building proposed for the other half of the block is getting resistance from the community. They claim it's too tall for 7th street (which I don't agree with) and they're not happy that the developer isn't willing to include any retail. The senior rental building should receive final approvals this spring with construction starting shortly after that.
Add in the Metro State parking ramp, student center and science building and this neighborhood is going to look completely different in the next 12 month.

I disagree that it is too tall but agree about the retail on the first level.

They put up a post on July 16th showing pictures of the interior:
