Looks like they plan to have the site fully demolished by the end of next May. Everything goes except the fence around the site and the parking lot surface

The diagonal path option is the obvious winner, its the only choice that creates spaces remotely interesting/inviting.

The Kmart will be torn down soon. Glad to see that go!

Kmart will begin demolition today. The site will sit empty until 2025 when road construction starts which is pretty awful planning by the city

If they implement the diagnonal pedestrian/bike promenade across the site, I can see it being a really pleasant place. Something like a slightly narrowed european street with lots of amenities could be something really special. Important to not have it turn into another Nicollet Mall.
Still a little disappointed they opted to open the street to general traffic but at least they're planning on a narrow street with a raised crosswalk. Probably my favorite of all traffic calming options.

Thankfully they did leave this open to traffic. This is a major artery from downtown to Richfield.

I agree that leaving it open for car traffic is good thing. A lot of people drive in to visit Eat Street. It's inconvenient to come off 35W to Lake then meander around several side streets. Good urban design is about connectivity with major streets. Concerns are that drivers that normally take 1st Ave or Blaisdell will go use Nicollet now. But the design will be two lane and narrow. Traffic will be calm. People will bypass Eat Street and use the others if they are just driving through On the other hand VISITORS to Eat Street will have a clean way up Nicollet.

Good to see they are going with the best of the proposed layouts. As an anti car head I don't mind the street being open to car traffic. I think in this city car traffic is a reality, and the focus should not be on car-free zones rather on calming the fuck out of traffic and replacing lanes with transit lanes and bike infra extensively

I don't have a super strong view about what to do in this particular instance (aside from noting that it has not been an important route for cars since before I was born, which was not recently). But we absolutely should be developing car free zones, as the rest of the world has, in general.

like actual pedestrian destinations absolutely. car and bus free. and they have to be cool/an actual draw
